Bavarian Representative Office in South Africa

Since 2007, location marketing for Bavaria has been actively pursued in South Africa with the aim of supporting South African companies in entering the Bavarian market.

At the same time, the Bavarian representative office in Johannesburg also supports Bavarian companies in their expansion plans in southern Africa and in networking with local business partners.

State Development Agency of Thuringia now represented in South Africa

The Free State of Thuringia forms the interface between established markets and the emerging economies of Eastern Europe. More than 280 million consumers live in a radius of 800 kilometers, in which a GDP of 8.7 trillion Euros is generated.

Thuringia boasts a much diversified industrial sector that ranges from the food to the automotive industry to high-tech industries such as biotechnology and opto-electronics. An efficient craft sector and the growing service sector are further powerful pillars of Thuringia’s economy.

For years, the processing industry has been the engine of economic growth. Its gross value added has doubled in the last ten years and more than quadrupled compared to that of 1991. The share of processing industry in the overall economic output of Thuringia is above the German national average.

Thuringian exports reached a volume of 14.4 billion Euros in 2016. 

The Free State’s key industrial sectors include:

  • Mechanical engineering & automotive metals production, processing
  • Food production and Food processing
  • Electrical engineering, electronics, precision mechanics, opto-electronics, EDP
  • Rubber and plastics
  • Paper and printing
  • Glass, ceramics, raw materials for construction

Since 1st June 2019 the LEG Thüringen (State Development Agency of Thuringia) is represented in South Africa.

Baden-Württemberg

The Federal State Baden-Württemberg (supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism Baden-Württemberg) is now represented in South Africa as of 1 June 2019.

The Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry office will support in the promotion, expansion and development of economic cooperation between Baden Württembergian and South African companies and organizations as well as deepen existing economic relationships in South Africa. 

Baden-Württemberg is located in the southwest of the Federal Republic of Germany. With over 11 million inhabitants in 2019, Baden-Württemberg is third the most populated state in Germany. Baden-Württemberg´s capital city is Stuttgart. Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading economic and innovative regions in Germany and Europe and is the largest exporter in Germany. In 2019, the regional gross domestic product (GDP) in Baden-Württemberg was €524billion. 

Baden-Württemberg’s key industrial sectors include: 

  • In 2019, the export volume of Baden-Württemberg amounted to €205 billion, representing 15.5% of German exports.
  • The strengths of the regional economy are the automotive industry, which is still on the rise, representing 29.8% of the industrial turnover.
  • Followed by the mechanical engineering, representing 21.5% of the industrial turnover and the metal and electrical industries.
  • The chemical, pharmaceutical and optical industries contribute to the overall increasing national production.
