The concept of the sponge city is gaining international attention as urban areas look for ways to cope with more intense rainfall, flooding risks, and water scarcity. Instead of letting rainwater run off unused, sponge cities integrate natural and technical solutions to absorb, store, and reuse water where it falls. This reduces pressure on sewer systems, helps prevent flooding, and creates valuable water reserves for dry periods.

Contributing to this vision, INTEWA has launched the new DRAINMAX system family. At its core is the DRAINMAX tunnel, which combines infiltration with large-volume storage of rainwater. Municipalities, companies, and developers can use this stored water for diverse applications, such as fire-fighting reserves or industrial processes. The lightweight, modular elements make transport and installation efficient, while the robust, DIBt-approved design ensures long-term performance – even beneath traffic areas. With options for pre-filtration and digital monitoring, DRAINMAX also delivers operational security for decades.

By enabling efficient collection and reuse of rainwater, systems like DRAINMAX bring the sponge city principle to life, helping cities become more resilient and sustainable in the face of climate change.
