The Southern African-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce was proud to participate in the recent Smart Manufacturing and Technology Summit as an Association Partner. This event was held from 2–13 May 2025 at The Houghton Hotel in Johannesburg. The summit brought together a dynamic mix of manufacturers, technology leaders, and policymakers to explore how digital innovation is transforming South Africa’s manufacturing landscape.

From Obligation to Opportunity: Reframing Carbon Neutrality

A key highlight of our participation was a fireside chat featuring our Deputy CEO - Southern African German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Alexa Gerrard, who shared insights under the theme: "From Obligation to Opportunity: Why Carbon Neutrality Makes Business Sense for South African Manufacturers”.

This session explored how emerging environmental regulations, particularly in Europe, including Germany’s evolving legislation, particularly Germany’s Federal Climate Change Action Act—are influencing international trade dynamics. The Act mandates a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030, 88% by 2040, and aims for climate neutrality by 2045. This legislation, along with the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which imposes tarids on carbon-intensive imports, is reshaping market access for manufacturers worldwide. The session emphasised that South African manufacturers must begin to see carbon neutrality not as a burden, but as a competitive advantage.

A compelling case study highlighted the experience of HyIron, a Namibian manufacturer operating a green iron plant powered by green hydrogen in its production processes. By aligning with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements, HyIron has gained a clear competitive advantage in the low-carbon market. The company has seen overwhelming demand from German buyers, including a major od-take agreement with automotive supplier Benteler for up to 200,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron (DRI) annually. This example underscores the significant market advantage and growth potential available to manufacturers in Africa who proactively adopt cleaner technologies.

Rather than viewing carbon neutrality only as a compliance requirement, the discussion invited South African manufacturers to also see it as a strategic lever for competitiveness, market access, and longterm value creation.

The session was expertly moderated by Ms. Sherrie Donaldson, Lead: Emerging Opportunities at Harambee, and contributed valuable perspective to the broader dialogue on sustainable industry transformation.

With a forward-looking agenda covering AI, Machine Learning, Digital Twins, Predictive Analytics, HyperAutomation, IIoT, and Cybersecurity, the summit placed a strong focus on how Africa can position itself as a globally competitive manufacturing hub, aligned with national development goals and the continent’s unique strengths.

Looking Ahead

Our engagement at the summit reflects a growing commitment to leveraging innovation and sustainability as cornerstones of industrial progress. We look forward to ongoing collaboration with partners across sectors to unlock South Africa’s potential as a leader in smart, inclusive, and sustainable manufacturing.
