Working in Germany – Information and Support from SAGCC

Guidance for Applicants who want to work and live in Germany

Working in Germany

Your Path to Germany:

Targeted and effective skilled labour migration is only possible through legal and regulated channels. If you are interested in an apprenticeship in Germany, it’s essential that the following is clear to you:

No fees for applicants in Germany:

German law strictly prohibits charging applicants any fees for placement or advisory services. All costs for ethical recruitment must be covered by the employer or its agency.

What do you need to obtain the long-term national visa that allows you to work in Germany?

To obtain a German Employment Visa in Germany as a skilled worker (including apprentices) from South Africa, you need to meet specific requirements. Germany has streamlined the process for qualified professionals from non-EU countries, including South Africa, under the Skilled Immigration Act. The SAGCC will support you with the visa application process, but the following needs to be taken in consideration:

1.     Training Placement

You must have a concrete apprenticeship position with a company or a vocational school in Germany

2.     Language Proficiency

You must demonstrate German language skills at a minimum of B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

3.     School-leaving Certificate

You must provide evidence of a school-leaving certificate that qualifies you for higher education or a recognized qualification from a German school abroad

4.     Clean Criminal Record

Some visas require a certificate of good conduct or police clearance from South Africa

Visa Application Documents

You will typically need:

  • A valid passport
  • A completed visa application form
  • A valid apprenticeship contract
  • A valid school-leaving certificate
  • Passport photos

South African citizens must apply at the German Embassy in Pretoria or the Consulate in Cape Town. Processing times can take 4-12 weeks, so applications must be submitted early.
