Working in Germany – Information & Support

Guidance for Applicants who want to work and live in Germany

Arbeiten in Deutschland

Your Path to Germany

Germany needs skilled workers – but immigration is only possible through legal, regulated channels. If you are interested in working in Germany, it's essential to understand the process.

What you need to know:

No fees for applicants in Germany
German law strictly prohibits charging applicants any fees for placement or advisory services. All costs for ethical recruitment must be covered by the employer or its agency.

What do you need to obtain an Employment Visa

To obtain a German Employment Visa in Germany as a skilled worker from South Africa, you need to meet specific requirements. Germany has streamlined the process for qualified professionals from non-EU countries, including South Africa, under the Skilled Immigration Act. The SAGCC will support you with the visa application process, but the following need to be taken in consideration:

1. Recognized Qualification

  • Academic Degree: If you are applying for a job that requires a university degree, your degree must be recognized or equivalent to a German degree.
  • Vocational Qualification: If you have vocational training, it must be recognized by German authorities (such as the ZAB – Central Office for Foreign Education).

Check recognition here:

2. Job Offer or Employment Contract

You must have a concrete job offer or signed employment contract from a German employer relevant to your qualifications.

3. Proof of Qualifications

Provide:

  • Diploma or degree certificate
  • Academic transcripts or vocational training certificates
  • German recognition certificate (if required)

4. Language Skills

For certain professions or if specified by the employer, you may need proof of German language skills (commonly A2 to B2 level, depending on the job).

5. Clean Criminal Record

Some visas require a certificate of good conduct or police clearance from South Africa.

6. Visa Application Documents

You will typically need:

  • Valid passport
  • Completed visa application form
  • Job offer/employment contract
  • Recognized qualification documentation
  • Passport photos

7. Apply at the German Embassy or Consulate

South African citizens must apply at the German Embassy in Pretoria or the Consulate in Cape Town. Processing times can take 4–12 weeks, so apply early.
