Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Reader,

Spring has sprung, promising to chase away some of the winter blues!  As such, it is a pleasure to present this SPRING Edition of our newsletter.

While the Cape has enjoyed plenty of rain, the northern regions are eagerly awaiting the summer rains. The dams in the Cape have reached levels not seen since 2015. We are grateful that the critical situation of the last season has ended for the time being.

While it is a remarkable achievement of solidarity for the Cape and her people that the water consumption was reduced to 50 litres per person per day, it is also an urgent wake-up call to prepare for the future.

We must not sit back and think that a drought will not happen again.

The opposite is the case: the time is right to establish a Water Management Competence Centre, where SA and German expertise are pooled into a partnership to sustainably deal with the challenges around water management in the Southern African region. The Chamber has prepared a project proposal for the German authorities to establish the regional water management Competence Centre in cooperation with our SA and German partners.

Meanwhile, there are many other challenges to be dealt with. Among them is the technical recession in SA, the desperate financial situation of a number of state-owned enterprises, and the slow progress in economic reform measures, all of which could lead to a further downgrade by the rating agencies.

Although we cannot expect much activity in these fields before the elections next year, preparation for the most urgent steps must start now. The Chamber and her members are looking forward to the economic stimulus package, which will be presented to parliament in the midterm budget on 24 October 2018.

More than a stimulus package, the national economy needs new investments from local and international investors, policy certainty, and stability of the regulatory framework. The one follows the other.

Delegation of the European Union to South Africa recently published a discussion paper (available here [link]) outlining key challenges that would concern European investors as well as possible ways forward for the EU and South Africa. The EU, as South Africa's biggest investment partner, welcomes President Ramaphosa's strong commitment to building a new social compact around investment and many are optimistic that both sides of the story will be considered in investment decisions in the near future. This discussion paper should certainly stimulate worthwhile deliberation at this year’s Binational Commission.

Unfortunately, the Bi-National Commission between SA and Germany, which was planned for October 2018, had to be postponed due to time constraints in the ministerial calendars. However, we can now look forward to a planned visit of the German Federal President, Frank Walter Steinmeier, to South Africa in November. Together with our partners in SA and Germany we are planning a forum, at which we will discuss the urgent topics in bilateral business relations. Please watch this space and our website: www.germanchamber.co.za

Best regards,

Matthias Boddenberg

Survey Trade relations Mozambique and Angola

There is still scope for growth for trade and investment by German companies in Angola and Mozambique. Therefore, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy commissioned the Chambers of Commerce (AHKs) in Portugal and South Africa to conduct a study to analyse decision-making criteria for market entry and investment decisions in the two countries. Based on this, recommendations will be developed on how AHKs can further support German companies through their market entry service offerings.

The purpose of this survey (1 minute max) is to provide a quantitative overview of business engagement in Angola and Mozambique. The results will be included in the study. Please click here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZXMFZZV

If you have further questions, please contact Ms. Claudia Schmidt: cschmidt@germanchamber.co.za. The survey is open until 30 September. We thank you for your participation..

Talented and Ambitious Student Looking for Postgraduate Funding

Young, talented, hard-working, and ambitious individual looking for sponsor to cover tuition fees for the two-year master’s programme in Sustainable Development at the University of Stellenbosch. Why? The university has discontinued its merit scholarship programme in 2018. Without a sponsor, I would not be able to pay the tuition fees. I was born in Germany, grew up in South Africa and am now about to graduate from one of the highest-ranking universities for business and economics in Germany – as one of the best in my year. It is my desire to return to South Africa and take up postgraduate studies in the field of sustainability (one of my majors), and remain in the country thereafter. Taking the discussions about climate change and its implications as a backdrop: Finding ways to make our world sustainable, both economically and ecologically, is without a doubt the biggest challenge humankind has ever faced. However, with the right ideas and leaders, I believe that this is a problem that we can solve together. I am optimistic about what the future holds and see myself advancing the research in this field. Why Stellenbosch? Partly due to its academic reputation and because there is no better way to learn about sustainability than at the heart of a problem, in this case the current water crisis in the Western Cape.

HEALTH CHECK FOR VEHICLES

According to a study by CASTROL, Germany

  • 8 % of all vehicles on German roads show excessive amounts of fuel in the engine
  • 10% excessive amounts of Glycol.

There is no reason why this should be different in South Africa.

Should this not be of concern for any responsible motorist? After all, his and his family’s safety could be at stake, never mind the financial loss. Almost 25% of all expenditure in South Africa relate to vehicles.

For the first time MOTORcheckUP enables us to check the health of “heard, lung, liver, stomach” (used as an allegory) or engine, transmission, power steering, brake system of any vehicle. Call it a “blood test” for vehicles. Abnormalities are detected and possible consequences of ignoring these warning signs are explained.

How accurate is such a test you may ask? TUV Sued, Germany is the world’s largest and best known independent accreditation authority. They have approved the testing method. The European patent authority as well as major non-European industrialised nations have issued patents, confirming the uniqueness of MOTORcheckUP. To top it all, the Ombudsman of the Motor Industry in South Africa has endorsed the product as well.

For less than a fast food meal we acquire peace of mind on the second most expensive investment, after housing, i.e. the motor car.

How can Africa and Europe move forward together?

African economies face a number of critical challenges, but also offer many opportunities. Unfortunately, most indicators suggest that large parts of Africa are not on track to address the critical challenges and leverage the opportunities. Africa’s and Europe’s challenges are linked in multiple ways. Accordingly, we want to discuss how Africa and Europe can move forward together by jointly developing and using evidence-based solutions.

Leuphana University and the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies  are pleased to invite you to the three-day conference "Africa and Europe Moving Forward Together – Evidence-based Solutions for African Development.” The conference held from January 24 to January 26, 2019, will be the inaugural conference. The focus of the inaugural conference is on ECONOMY and EMPLOYMENT. [Read more]

Call for support

Searching for best practices in the working life for a more inclusive world of work!

The German Government commissioned an international study on accessibility,
which is conducted by the DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance).

The objective of the study is to find best practices around the world for an extensively accessible working environment in the private sector.

We need your support!

We are looking for enterprises, which have been already implemented strategies or practices to improve the foresighted accessibility and reduce barriers at the workplace.

If you want to support the study or need more
information, please check out our website and fill out the questionnaire
