Wits DigiMine Seminar
The Wits Mining Institute (WMI) is a research institute with a focus on Applied Research for the Digital mines of the Future. WMI is home to the Sibanye-Stillwater Digital Mining Laboratory (DigiMine).
DigiMine is a state of the art facility that has been converted to simulate mining operations by creating a mine surface using the roof of the Chamber of Mines Building at Wits University. A vertical shaft using the stairwells in the 4th quadrant of the building to a mock underground mine (70m development tunnel as well as a conventional narrow reef stope) and a control room in the basement. The research agenda of DigiMine is to transfer surface technologies into the underground mining environment. The DigiMine is equipped with the latest digital systems to enable research for the mine of the future. On the 8th and 9th of April 2019, the WMI hosted a DigiMine Seminar. The Seminar focused on the DigiMine Research Agenda, research outcomes and the latest technological systems for the mining industry. Seminar topics included keynotes on how the Fourth Industrial Revolution is changing the landscape, presentations and demonstrations by DigiMines’ research partners on their system solutions and how they contribute to digitalisation in mining and DigiMines’ research agenda. It also included presentations by selected post graduate students whose research has been examined for higher degree purposes.
