European Union Delegation to the Republic of South Africa

About the EU Delegation to South Africa:

Since the European Union Delegation was established in the country after the first democratic elections in 1994, the EU and South Africa saw rapidly expanded cooperation, culminating in 2007 with the establishment of the Strategic Partnership, a forward looking platform that facilitates wide ranging cooperation between our two parties.

A range of dialogues between the EU and South Africa allow us to share experiences in areas of common interest, or where we face common challenges. Areas covered by these dialogues include education, health, energy, the environment, macro-economic policies, human rights and peace and security including maritime security. Our partnership is broad and comprehensive and covers political, trade and development interests. Representing more than 70% of all the FDI and South Africa's single biggest trading partner, the EU plays a critical role in South Africa's development as acknowledged in the 2016 SONA speech. The actioning of the SADC EU Economic Partnership Agreement in 2016 further places our relationship at the heart of the region's efforts to promote market integration, supporting the goals of the NDP, and bringing value to the EU SA Strategic Partnership. Sustained development co-operation in areas such as skills development, private sector support and public finance management have been acknowledged as catalytic elements of reform and enhanced governance in the country.

Except for consular tasks, the EU Delegation in Pretoria functions like an embassy; it is a diplomatic mission representing the European Union to South Africa together with the 28 Member States of the European Union. The delegation performs a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing relations between the EU and South Africa.
