About the 2017 Edelman Trust Barometer

The 2017 Edelman Trust Barometer is the 17th edition of the annual trust and credibility survey. The survey sampled more than 33,000 respondents across 28 countries and asks respondents how much they trust the four institutions of government, business, non-governmental organizations and media to do what is right. There is a deeply disturbing news in the 2017 Barometer in that there is a yawning trust gap is emerging between elite and mass populations.
One clear indication from the report is that there is a rise of populism in most countries today.  Globalisation and technological change have further weakened people's trust in global institutions. The consequence is a rise in populism and nationalism as the mass population has taken control away from the elite. This has been made evident by the decisive vote for a Brexit and the outcome of the last US Presidential election. The rise in populism has implications for government, business, media and even non-governmental organisations in South Africa.
Join us as we take a deep dive into the South African data to explore where opportunities exist to regain trust among sceptics, as well as how business is primed to lead in this new reality.
