The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) in partnership with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) and the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAGCC) cordially invites you to this briefing on the results of the 2012 Reconciliation Barometer survey, which aims to bring the findings of this national public opinion poll to representatives of the business sector as well as the media. With a focus on youth opinion on reconciliation, the report on the latest survey – entitled “Ticking Time Bomb or Demographic Dividend” – found that while young South Africans appear to be interested in participating in politics, they are sceptical about political parties, mistrust leadership and are concerned about the extent of corruption in the country. Many are optimistic about their future economic prospects, but in the current economic climate will likely face challenges in accessing education and training and entering the labour market. The latest findings of the Reconciliation Barometer Survey, which tracks governance, institutional trust, economic performance and household wellbeing, and how they find bearing in the popular sentiment of people in South Africa, will be presented by Jan Hofmeyr and Kate Lefko-Everett from the Institute. The survey provides crucial insights into popular perceptions of the state of democracy, the economy as well as social cohesion in South Africa.
