Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Reader,

The deadline for the new mining charter has been extended to the end of August 2018. The Minister of Mineral Resources did so to allow for more time for consultation around the principle “once empowered, always empowered”. SA-based industries welcome this extension, which also offers government time to listen to the opinions and concerns of locally-based businesses in this regard. However, it clearly points to the dilemma of investment in this important sector of industry in South Africa.

How should any investor and, especially a new foreign investor, deal with the ever-shifting goalposts of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment? German companies in the country have supported the transformation of the economy by actively engaging in the process. But what about the government’s target for new foreign investment amounting to 100 bn USD?

Money is a very shy animal and doesn’t like uncertainty in the regulatory environment. New foreign investment, as well as local investment, needs an enabling environment. One of the pre-conditions is a consistent, reliable and sustainable policy framework for the transformation process.

The same applies to the discussion about a possible change of the constitution with regards to the debate around “expropriation without compensation”. As expressed so many times, a change of the constitution might not be necessary according to many legal minds. As the old saying goes: If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!

After a number of years of economic policy uncertainty, what the economy needs now is a period of stability in order to gain stability and resilience to face the challenges that will come in the future. A trade war between the major economic powers is looming and SA’s economy must be prepared for the difficult times ahead.  The risk of sliding into yet another recession is simply too great and would have disastrous consequences for many people.

On a different note: The Bi-National Commission between South Africa and Germany will take place toward the end of this year. No exact date has been set yet. This important meeting will deal, not only with the economy, but also with training and education, and cultural co-operation between the countries. It is an opportunity to make the voices of businesses heard. The Chamber conducted a survey and identified a number of issues. There is still time to express your concern and give your input. Please send your comments to us: bnc@germanchamber.co.za

Last, but certainly not least: The Annual General Meeting of the Chamber took place on June 21, 2018. The members of the Chamber elected a new Board of Directors.

Ms Sabine Dall’Omo was re-elected President, Mr Tim Abbott re-elected as Deputy President and Mr Peter Falke re-elected as Vice President of the Chamber. Dr Dieter Kovar, Mr Jens Papperitz and Mr Pfungwa Serima will serve as additional Directors. Mr Seth Phalatse and myself will continue to serve as ex-officio members of the Board.

Congratulations to all re-elected members! The Chamber’s management and staff are looking forward to a continued good and successful cooperation!

Kind regards

Matthias Boddenberg

Johannesburg, 11 July 2018 – As much as companies want to invest in South Africans and contribute to the dream of Radical Economic Transformation, many of these companies do not have the time or resources to train up young, skilled workers. Even those that can spare the money and time still find themselves confronted with this obstacle: a lack of knowledgeable and understanding mentors to successfully impart the training curriculum to apprentices while keeping them motivated to pursue a specific profession.

Talented and Ambitious Student Looking for Postgraduate Funding

Young, talented, hard-working, and ambitious individual looking for sponsor to cover tuition fees for the two-year master’s programme in Sustainable Development at the University of Stellenbosch. Why? The university has discontinued its merit scholarship programme in 2018. Without a sponsor, I would not be able to pay the tuition fees. I was born in Germany, grew up in South Africa and am now about to graduate from one of the highest-ranking universities for business and economics in Germany – as one of the best in my year. It is my desire to return to South Africa and take up postgraduate studies in the field of sustainability (one of my majors), and remain in the country thereafter. Taking the discussions about climate change and its implications as a backdrop: Finding ways to make our world sustainable, both economically and ecologically, is without a doubt the biggest challenge humankind has ever faced. However, with the right ideas and leaders, I believe that this is a problem that we can solve together. I am optimistic about what the future holds and see myself advancing the research in this field. Why Stellenbosch? Partly due to its academic reputation and because there is no better way to learn about sustainability than at the heart of a problem, in this case the current water crisis in the Western Cape.

According to a study by CASTROL, Germany

  • 8 % of all vehicles on German roads show excessive amounts of fuel in the engine and
  • 10% excessive amounts of Glycol.

There is no reason why this should be different in South Africa.

Should this not be of concern for any responsible motorist? After all, his and his family’s safety could be at stake, never mind the financial loss. Almost 25% of all expenditure in South Africa relate to vehicles.

For the first time MOTORcheckUP enables us to check the health of “heard, lung, liver, stomach” (used as an allegory) or engine, transmission, power steering, brake system of any vehicle. Call it a “blood test” for vehicles. Abnormalities are detected and possible consequences of ignoring these warning signs are explained.

How accurate is such a test you may ask? TUV Sued, Germany is the world’s largest and best known independent accreditation authority. They have approved the testing method.
The European patent authority as well as major non-European industrialised nations have issued patents, confirming the uniqueness of MOTORcheckUP.
To top it all, the Ombudsman of the Motor Industry in South Africa has endorsed the product as well.

For less than a fast food meal we acquire peace of mind on the second most expensive investment, after housing, i.e. the motor car.
