Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Reader,

The rating agencies have given South Africa the benefit of the doubt and kept to their current rating, although it is essentially “junk status”. The outlook for economic growth was adjusted upwardly and business confidence increased slightly. All things considered, it could have been worse.

This is an opportunity for the new administration under President Ramaphosa to introduce and implement consistent economic and fiscal policies, to intensify the fight against corruption and nepotism, and to restructure the ailing state-owned enterprises.

The goal to attract 100 bn USD in new investments into the country over the next five years is ambitious, but achievable, provided the framework for investment is the right one. Local and foreign investors will scrutinise the conditions in the country. One of the major points will be the discussion around land reform, land distribution and “Expropriation without compensation”. The way that this topic is being discussed and dealt with, will determine the level of confidence of the investment community.

The process is almost as important as the outcome. South Africa can show the world the level of maturity as a democratic country governed by the rule of law, aimed at creating a better life for all.

The eyes of many German investors are firmly on SA. A number of delegations from Germany visited/ are visiting the country:

A 40- member business delegation from the Federal State of Lower Saxony, headed by Minister President Stefan Weil, visited South Africa.

A delegation from the VDMA (Association of Manufacturers of Machinery and Plants) is currently in the country to discuss opportunities in the agro and food processing industry.

Next week, a 60- strong delegation from the Federal State of Bremen and Bremerhaven, led by the President of the Senate and Mayor of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Carsten Sieling, will visit the Western Cape, KZN and Namibia.

The interest from Germany is there, but it is up to us to decide what we make out of it.

Last but not least:
The Annual general meeting of the Chamber will take place on June 21, 2018 at 10.30h at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park. All members are invited to attend. (Please click here to view the invitation)

Kind regards

Matthias Boddenberg

Lusaka Office

8th Zambia International Mining & Energy Conference & Exhibition is taking place in Lusaka, Zambia from 21-22 June 2018.

Mining accounts for 12% of Zambia’s GDP and 70% of total export value. An analysis of mining in Zambia shows a clear historical link between levels of mining investment and wider economic development. There is a foreign and regional investment drive towards Zambia’s mining sector due to its reformed mining sector governance, political stability, vast untapped natural resources and favourable economic environment.
