Joburg Indaba- A new dawn for South Africa’s mining industry (3rd and 4th October 2018-Inanda Club, Sandton)

On the 3rd and 4th of October 2018 the Competence Centre for Mineral Resources (CCMR) attended the Joburg Indaba at the Inanda Club, Sandton. 
The Joburg Indaba is a mining industry platform where industry leaders engage in honest and robust conversations about the state of the industry and potential solutions to the challenges faced by the industry. This year’s theme was “A New Dawn” for the mining industry. It followed the policy certainty created by the gazetting of the Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter for the Mining and Minerals Industry (Mining Charter 3) on the 27th of September 2018 and the withdrawal of Mineral and Petroleum Resource Development Amendment Bill.

The Conference was kicked off by a Ministerial Keynote address by the Hon. Minister Mr Gwede Mantashe who spoke about the various interventions planned by government to enable a “new dawn” for South African Mining. Key to this will be an efficient, functional and competent regulator that will be fair and just in its application of Mine Health and Safety Act. He spoke about the importance of a partnership between all stakeholders (labour, industry, communities and government) in ensuring a sustainable mining industry. The conference then went into various sessions and panel discussions over the two days. The topics of the sessions were:  

  1. SA Mining: A Reality Check; 
  2. What are the economic enablers for the mining industry?  Government’s role:  how can SOEs unlock potential? 
  3. What are the economic enablers for the mining industry?  Government’s role:  how can SOEs unlock potential? 
  4. Where are the opportunities and challenges for PGMs and Gold?
  5. Reality Check on Safety: Journey towards Zero Harm
  6. How can we create jobs and save mining in SA?
  7. Reality Check: Investment
  8. How are companies managing their balance sheets in these volatile times?
  9. Community Engagement:  how do we do this effectively?
  10. Community Engagement:  how do we do this effectively?
  11. Beneficiation – a Reality Check: Is there a logic or not? and
  12. Finding and Funding the Future Industry

The speakers on the various topics were CEO’s of Major South African mining houses, CEO’s and executives of State Owned enterprises, veterans of the mining industry, economists and executives of consulting firms in the mining industry. Overall the Joburg Indaba was a huge success and “a new dawn” seems to be on the horizon for South Africa’s mining industry.
