The IFAT Africa trade fair is a key event for environmental technology in Southern Africa. The trade fair was held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre from the 12 – 14 September 2017. IFAT Africa offers a full range of environmental technologies and services with a comprehensive product portfolio, ranging from simple to technologically advanced machines and solutions in the areas of water, sewage, refuse, recycling and energy conservation.

Investments in infrastructure and water supply are urgently needed in Africa. Governments on the continent face major challenges in the form of growing populations, economic expansion, scarce water resources, extensive agriculture and the rising amount of waste. In order to offer business representatives within these sectors an opportunity to meet with selected potential business partners and visit manufacturers and institutions within these industries, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana organized a business delegation to IFAT Africa in cooperation with the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The delegation kicked off on Monday, 11 September 2017, with visits to various local companies. The first visit was at PROXA (PTY) LTD, where Ms Elspeth Grahn, Director of Business Development, informed the delegates about the company and its various projects in Africa. The next visit was at WastePlan Gauteng (Pty) Ltd. Mr Gary Gosling, General Manager Gauteng, and his team gave the delegates some insight into how the different waste streams are managed and treated in the Gauteng area. The third visit was at Aurecon where Mr Nick Mannie, Technical Director: Waste, advised the delegates on how to strategically plan the waste management system of a city. Lastly, the delegates visited KSB Pumps & Valves South Africa. Dr Sven Baumgarten, Managing Director, and his team briefly gave an overview of the company and the projects it is involved in. After the presentation, the delegates were taken on a factory tour.

On Tuesday, 12 September, and Wednesday, 13 September, the delegates had the chance to explore IFAT Africa in their own time. They also had the opportunity for individual B2B meetings and attending seminars and talks at the various forums.

On Thursday, 14 September 2017, the delegation continued with its company visits. The first stop was at Wilo South Africa. Mr Kuben Thavar, Export Sales Manager, first introduced the company with a presentation, before the delegates were taken on a factory tour.
