  • BASF donates R130 000 to educational outreach programme
  • The initiative aims to strengthen important learning areas

Johannesburg, South Africa – 24 August 2017. BASF recently contributed over R130 000 towards the funding of the science and numeracy components of Thanda‘s afterschool programmes at four schools in the Umtwalume community in Kwa Zulu Natal. This has provided over 400 learners from grades R to 7 with fun, interactive, and engaging educational activities designed to strengthen their science and numeracy skills.

Benoit Fricard, Managing Director of BASF Holdings South Africa, and Southern Africa country cluster head said: “Over the past seven years, BASF has focused on  maths and science educational support, often collaborating with NGOs, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and a number of universities. BASF is committed to supporting education in areas where we can add to a positive change.  The Thanda initiative aims to expose underpriviliged learners to hands-on experience in the exciting field of science. In supporting this programme, BASF hopes to increase awareness amongst learners about careers in the scientific field.“

Founded in 2008, Thanda‘s objective is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make positive contributions to their communities. Thanda started as an after-school programme in the rural community of Mtwalume in KwaZulu-Natal. Its educational model fcouses on sustainable development and education by using local resources to provide after-school educational support and offering a holistic approach to development that encompasses a variety of programmes and services.

Shannon Vaughan, Partnership and Marketing Manager at Thanda explains: “At Thanda, science and numeracy are two of seven focus areas forming part of Thanda’s creative learning curriculum. In the science focus area, children are encouraged to examine their surroundings, ask questions, and develop a sense of wonder for the world around them. In the field of numeracy, the learners develop solid foundations in mathematics, to be able to apply this in real life. At the core of the Thanda model is the facilitated learning method –  learning through experience rather than being taught by a teacher, with projects and hands-on activities being integrated into all of Thanda‘s themes.“
