Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Reader,

On behalf of the Directorate, Senior Council and staff of the Chamber, I wish all our members and friends a happy, healthy and successful year 2018!

The year started with a fresh wind and positive energy after the changes in the ruling party, ANC, early in December 2017. It soon became clear that local and international markets still have strong confidence in the future developments in South Africa. The Rand gained against most major currencies, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange crossed the 60,000 mark, and in general, a lot of cleaning up and clearing out started in the first weeks of the year.

The Chamber and its members sincerely wish for the new leadership to continue to apply a determined approach to fight corruption, favouritism and nepotism and to apply a sustainable economic and fiscal policy to promote economic growth!

The Chamber’s year started with the Back-to-Work event in Johannesburg on January 18. More than 120 members attended the event, where we discussed the plans for the Chamber’s work during the year. (Please click here to see some photos)

On January 23, the Chamber hosted a member of the executive board of the Deutsche Bundesbank, Dr Andreas Dombret.

Dr Dombret elaborated on the monetary situation in the Eurozone in general and Germany in particular. All indicators for economic development, growth and employment are pointing in the right, positive direction. (Please click here to view a photo)

On January 24, the Chamber welcomed the new German Ambassador to South Africa, Dr Martin Schäfer. At the January Member’s Luncheon, Dr Schäfer was the Guest of Honour and main speaker. Many of our members will remember the Soccer World Cup of 2010, during which Dr Schäfer served at the German Embassy as Head of the Press Department. In his speech, he expressed his wish for even better relations between the two countries and his intention to contribute to this on all levels of society.

In the coming weeks, the Chamber will arrange for a number of delegations and events. Please go to our website (www.germanchamber.co.za) to check them out. Of particular interest will be the workshop on the situation, developments and opportunities in Zimbabwe on February 13.

Last but not least:
The Chamber and its members congratulate Mr Aaron Daniel Mminele, Deputy Governor of the SA Reserve Bank, on being awarded the Great Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany! (Please click here to view a photo of the bestowal ceremony)

Best regards

Matthias Boddenberg

The Competence Centre: Training and CSR

Mobile Library to underprivileged school
Aim of Competence Centre: Corporate Social Responsibility?
It is sometimes overwhelming realising just how many people need help and it is heart-breaking to to see how much has to be accomplished to make a difference to a world in need, the Competence Centre:  Corporate Social Responsibility decided to aim its focus on the education of the vulnerable, impoverished and needy children in society.

The Competence Centre:  Corporate Social Responsibility, and its members, believes that although one can unfortunately not assist all of Africa’s half a billion children in need, it is our social mission to start closer to home and to unite as a business community to assist schools with their ever increasing social and educational tasks.  It is believed that supporting underprivileged schools with time, books or other reading and writing material will enable children to break free from the bonds of poverty and illiteracy.

In 2017 with the support of Mercedes Benz South Africa, Competence Centre: CSR identified and sponsored Tarlton Farm School.

Longevity - The Salvation Army

They say time flies when you’re having fun, but the reality is that in today’s world so many organisations are transient, coming and going without anybody noticing their passage. The Salvation Army, on the other hand, has been around for more than 150 years – 152 this year to be precise. That’s more than a century and a half of caring for the needy, the destitute, the homeless, and those members of society that we often pretend don’t exist.

Our management structure, as our name suggests, is somewhat militaristic in nature, although instead of shooting people we save them. The highest rank is the General, who is based at the heart of The Salvation Army at the International Head Quarters. The General appoints each and every single Territorial Commander within our organisation’s 128 countries globally.

What have we done right for the past 150 years, and perhaps more importantly, will we survive another 150 in the future?

We certainly do believe that we will and with your help and support we will be stronger each and every day. www.salvationarmy.org.za
