e-NewsMail - Holiday Issue 2017

Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Member and Stakeholder,

As the year 2017 draws to a close, we take a look back at the past 12 months.  While the business confidence index is at a low, the trade relations between SA and Germany are showing remarkable strength and resilience. Supported by a weaker ZAR, SA exports to Germany have grown in 2017 with a two digit margin, while German exports to South Africa grew in higher single digit.

We expect the trade volume to reach a new record of around 17.5 bn Euro with German exports to SA amounting to around 10 bn Euro and SA exports to Germany coming to around 7.5 bn Euro.  This is certainly good news in a situation, characterised by negative sentiment in general.

Recent downgrades by the rating agencies seem not to have had the negative impact that we expected. However, the decisions of these agencies will have a long-term effect and make borrowing - especially for the country, provinces, municipalities and State-owned enterprises - more expensive. This will trickle down to the private sector and the consumer. We have to prepare for a challenging 2018.

The Elective Conference of the ANC, taking place on 16 and 17 December, will bring about the election of a new leadership of the ruling party. We hope that this conference will bring unity and create stability in terms of the economic policies of the ANC. This is the most urgently needed element to turn the negative sentiment into a positive outlook for 2018 and beyond. We wish the party delegates great wisdom in electing their new leadership.

The Global Business Network (GBN) has established a “Business and Co-operation Desk (BCD)” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to support German and African companies in their cooperation and to present initiatives of the International German Development Cooperation (GIZ) for Africa.
In close cooperation with the network of the bi-lateral German Chambers abroad (AHK Network), this BCD will be an important instrument to promote trade and investment relations between German companies and their African counterparts and partners. Contacts can be made via the coordinator, Ms Linda Schraml, Business & Cooperation Desk Ethiopia, e-mail:  linda.schraml@giz.de or via the coordinator at the AHK East Africa, Mr Chris Wegener, e-mail: chris.wegner@kenya-ahk.co.ke

Upcoming Events:
The Chamber’s Back-to-Work event will take place on 18 January 2018 at the Chamber’s premises in Johannesburg. (Please click here to view the invitation)

The first Members’ Luncheon will be on 24 January 2018. Guest of Honour and Speaker will be the recently appointed Ambassador of the Germany to South Africa, Dr Martin Schaefer. (Please click here to view the invitation)

This event will provide valuable information for our members about opportunities to finance renewable energy projects via KFW and First. (Please click here to view the invitation)

Last, but certainly not least: on behalf of the Directorate, Senior Council and the staff of the Chamber I wish all members and friends a blessed festive season and a great fresh start into the New Year!

Best regards

Matthias Boddenberg

KwaZulu-Natal - Durban

23 November 2017 - The year end member luncheon in Durban was an intimate affair. Mr Boddenberg gave the members feedback on the 2017 activities of the Durban office and highlighted the strategic plans for 2018. In spite of 2017 being a tough year for investments into South Africa, the overall exports to Germany increased by 12%. Although the political status of South Africa is highly volatile, and currently there is a bleak outlook for businesses, Mr Boddenberg remained optimistic about the 2018 plans for the Chamber. The layout and setting at the Durban Country Club was informal, and the members’ that attended were happy with the robust discussions that took place during the luncheon. A special thanks to former President Mr Seth Phalatse for joining the Durban members at their luncheon.

Empty Trips Pty Ltd

We use an open marketplace paired with smart algorithms to better match demand and supply of cargo transport. By using smart-mapped spaces we reduce wastage on moving vehicles to offer cost-savings. This lowers transport costs, often reducing the barriers to entry of products across Africa, and inflation linked increases for consumers. Ultimately, we aim to reduce the number of empty vehicles due to better utilization, leading to lower congestion, and as such, is better for the environment. Proving new business models and innovative thinking can connect Africa and enable growth assures the investment community that we are moving Africa forward, smartly.

A reading of Dr Khulu Mbatha's book "Unmasked"

28 November 2017, Johannesburg – Members were invited to a reading of Dr Khulu Mbatha’s insightful – if not a little controversial - book, Unmasked – Why the ANC failed to govern, which is sure to cause a stir within the governing party. Dr Khulu Mbatha is an ANC veteran, having served more than 40 years, many of which were spent in exile. He is perhaps best known for his tenure as former President Kgalema Motlanthe’s special advisor. In his book, he seeks to give a historical perspective on the ANC’s current challenges in government and inside the party. He suggests that the party was not ready to govern when it came to power in the early 90s, and had no specific plans for the country’s economy, while the party was still operating in exile. The evening was a great success with many attendees, who left surprised and intrigued by the revelations in Dr Mabtha’s book.

Longevity - The Salvation Army

They say time flies when you’re having fun, but the reality is that in today’s world so many organisations are transient, coming and going without anybody noticing their passage. The Salvation Army, on the other hand, has been around for more than 150 years – 152 this year to be precise. That’s more than a century and a half of caring for the needy, the destitute, the homeless, and those members of society that we often pretend don’t exist.

Our management structure, as our name suggests, is somewhat militaristic in nature, although instead of shooting people we save them. The highest rank is the General, who is based at the heart of The Salvation Army at the International Head Quarters. The General appoints each and every single Territorial Commander within our organisation’s 128 countries globally.

What have we done right for the past 150 years, and perhaps more importantly, will we survive another 150 in the future?

We certainly do believe that we will and with your help and support we will be stronger each and every day. www.salvationarmy.org.za
