e-NewsMail - October 2017

Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC

Dear Member and Stakeholder,

The Members’ Luncheon on 3 October  2017 saw more than 70 members discussing business and economic opportunities in Gauteng. Our Guest of Honour and main speaker was the CEO of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), Mr Saki Zamxaka. A concrete outcome of this event was the Chamber and GGDA’s plan to set up a task team of members and representatives of the agency to discuss ways to retain exiting and attract new German investment in the province and the country.

The Annual Event took place on 6 October 2017. More than 220 members and friends attended the event, which was a festival of great entertainment, good food and wine. The event was designed to be different from the “Annual Balls” held in the past. Feel free to have a look at the website and let us know what you thought about it.

The SA-German Chamber, together with Renewable Energy Academy AG (RENAC), and in collaboration with the Namibian Manufacturers Association (NMA), organised a conference on opportunities for energy efficiency in industry, and commercial buildings in Namibia. This should encourage exchange and explore business opportunities in energy efficiency between Namibian and German experts, enterprises and guests.

The conference is part of the “Energy Solutions Made in Germany” Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy (BMWi).

On 27 October 2017, the Chamber will host a Members’ Luncheon on business opportunities in Botswana. Our Guest of Honour and main speaker will be the Honourable Minister Vincent T. Seretse, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of the Republic of Botswana.  For more info, please click on the following link:

Upcoming events in November:
South African producers will have the opportunity to present their products and services to German/ European buyers at the 52nd BME Symposium Procurement and Logistics from 6 – 10 November 2017 in Berlin.

11 South African companies will travel to the symposium as part of a DTI outward selling mission and participate in the event with a joint exhibition booth, supported by TEDA. The mission programme will also include meetings with German producers, economic development partners, as well as a sourcing workshop in the days preceding the symposium.

The Chamber will facilitate the cooperation between the symposium host, BME, and the South African participants, as well as assist with the overall organisation and the programme and workshop in the days preceding the event. The Chamber set up a partnership for this project with the Strategic Partnership Digital Africa, a network made up of BME, companies and associations, which is supporting the project. The companies will have meetings in Johannesburg on 20 - 21 November. The remainder of the time will be dedicated to meet with additional potential business partners in Cape Town. The Packaging and Compliance Mozambique Conference 1-day Only – Johannesburg

Mozambique is clearly a huge growth market.  However, bottlenecks exist in the distribution network.  Recently, the government of Mozambique has enacted labelling laws, which don’t allow for a grace period. Imported goods in the following categories must immediately be compliant: foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, tobacco products and general non-foodstuffs.

On the 30 November in Johannesburg, we will look exclusively at and discuss the following programme. [more information]

Market Exploration Delegation of the Export Initiative Environmental Technologies as part of the SME market development programme 22 - 26 January 2018

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES: International donors have secured the finance of several water projects in Zambia, with projects focusing on the capital, Lusaka. The planned measures are the first step of implementation of the three-part masterplan, which includes drinking water, sewage and drainage. The other implementation parts of the masterplan should provide new orders, as well. In addition, investment can be found in the copperbelt area, a mineral-rich region along the border with the DR Congo. The Zambian water sector therefore provides numerous business opportunities for German companies.  [Read more]

Nspire Strategic and Management Solutions

When to consider a change management initiative

We are living in an age of constant change and complexity, where we need to be in a permanent state of alertness.

Most of us would agree that change is good, but sometimes it can have a very negative impact on our organisations. Stakeholder relationships, profitability and market positioning are affected by change and the way we respond to it. This presents both risks and opportunities, and how we address such organisational change determines whether the outcome will be positive or disastrous.

Some change can be managed internally, but there are times when it becomes necessary to call on the professional change management consultants. We have highlighted the 10 most frequent change scenarios where it is recommended to implement a change management initiative. You will find them listed on our website by clicking here

Potsdam’s leading highschool choir sings for Germany in South Africa
Looking for travel cost-sponsors to the 10th World Choir Games in July 2018

Representing Germany, the famous choir of the 280 years old  Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Gymnasium (www.helmholtzschule.de) in Potsdam will attend the first World Choir Games taking place on the African continent in July 2018. The Helmholtz-choir was placed second 2016 in Sotchi and 2014 in Riga in their category. In 2018, 45 young singers reach for gold!

This means a great effort for school and parents. The city council of Potsdam and the school’s friends' association support the travel financially. Even so, there are still a few thousand Euros of travel costs missing. It would be great to enable all singers to come, so please help with your sponsorship under www.leetchi.com/c/helmholtzchorsuedafrika.

Please contact Mr. Helgert Weber, music teacher and conductor of the choir per Email under helgert_weber@web.de or per telephone +49-(0)176-416 217 43 for any further requests or watch the choir at www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUCcNTp0WyY. Many thanks in advance for all donnations, little or generous! The singers look forward to meeting you in Tshwane.
