e-NewsMail - September 2017

Dear Members and Friends,

As we are approaching summer, the Chamber organised a number of events.

On 12 September, Mr Ian McCloy informed members on the topic of developing a regional strategy for German companies in Subsahara Africa. The Members’ Luncheon was well attended and offered great opportunities for networking.

On the same day, the Chamber organised a workshop on the challenge of “Acidic Mine Drainage” and ways to manage this challenge. The seminar coincided with the trade fair IFAT Africa. IFAT Africa is a forum cum exhibition on environmental technologies. This year, IFAT Africa took place from Tuesday, 12 September to Thursday, 14 September. The Chamber hosted a Zambian Delegation and a business delegation from Ghana.  Both delegations were organized by our colleagues in Lusaka and Accra. Such cooperation between the various offices of the German Chamber network in the region has lead to business contacts far beyond the borders of South Africa. An information session on Zambia complimented the business meetings.

Although we are still in the early days of the regional cooperation, it is clear that the cooperation of Ghanaian, Zambian, South African and German companies lead to progress in the multilateral trade relations between these countries.

On October 2, the Chamber organised a Members’ Luncheon with Mr Saki Zamxaka, CEO of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency. Members were invited to utilise this opportunity to engage in discussions about further opportunities in trade and investment between Germany and South Africa, here in particular with Gauteng province.

On October 6, the CEO of the AHK East Africa, Mrs Maren Diale-Schellschmidt, will inform Chamber members on business opportunities in Kenia and Tanzania
(Please click here for more information).

In the evening of October 6, the Chamber will become “UNPLUGGED”. The Flagship Event will be an evening of entertainment, networking and enjoyment of good food and wines.

Back to Business, an information event on education and training will be organised in Berlin Germany to discuss better avenues of cooperation in this extremely important field (please click here for more info.)

The next few weeks will offer great opportunities to network and to get down to business. Last but not least:

On October 27, the Chamber will host the Honourable Vincent T. Seretse, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of the Republic of Botswana. Please save the date; it will be an excellent opportunity to familiarise yourself with business opportunities in Botswana. (Please click here for more info)

Best regards

Western and Eastern Cape - (Cape Town)

The Chamber’s Cape Town office recently partnered with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation to host a business breakfast on the subject of “Beyond Business: The Private Sector’s Role in Inclusive Development” at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR). The topic was presented by Jan Hoffmeyr, the Head of the Research and Policy Unit of the IJR, who also led the subsequent discussion. The topics covered at the business breakfast included: the IJR's role in the fields of economic inclusion, social cohesion, and sustainable development; the “Transformation Audit” (a barometer of inclusive development and economic justice in South Africa); an overview of local stakeholder relations; and the private sector’s role in combatting economic injustice in an environment of political uncertainty. Guests were thoroughly intrigued and engaged. We would like to thank Mr Jan Hoffmeyr for his presentation and Ms Christina Teichmann of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for helping to make this event possible.
