e-NewsMail - August 2017

Dear Members and Friends,

Last week, Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), headed by Mr Bonang Mohale, published a document that is really worth studying.

Based on 3 pillars, BLSA sets out its strategy to deal with the crisis in South Africa. As part of a concerted action, BLSA pledged to work towards the consolidation and strengthening of the South African economy.

The pledge contains six main elements:

  • Create employment through growth in the economy
  • Encourage and empower senior black leadership as business leaders and entrepreneurs
  • Investment in training and education of management and workforce
  • Investment in community development
  • Support for small businesses through training and mentoring
  • Fight against corruption.

The SA – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its members welcome this pledge and will strive to be an active part of it. The Chamber seeks to contribute to the stabilisation and growth of the SA economy by way of the “German Industry Fund / Deutscher Industriefond” as well as the various training initiatives. The Chamber will continue to do so and expand its scope of operations.

In the coming months, the Chamber will be hosting a number of events and delegations:

IFAT Africa will be taking place in Johannesburg from 12 – 14 September 2017. IFAT Africa is a forum and an exhibition on environmental technologies, which takes place once a year in Johannesburg. As an offshoot of the IFAT in Munich, it offers the full range of environmental technologies and services with a comprehensive product portfolio ranging from simple to technologically advanced machines and solutions in the areas of water, sewage, refuse, recycling and energy conservation. Especially in Africa, investment in infrastructure and water supply is urgently needed. Growing populations, economic expansion, scarce water resources and extensive agriculture confront the government with major challenges. In addition, the amount of waste is enormously rising, especially in the mining industry, which is an important contribution payer to waste. The Chamber will be organizing a delegation of business people from Zambia to attend the trade fair and the conference.

Our next Member’s Luncheon will focus on business strategy in Africa and will be taking place on 12 September 2017. Our guest of Honor and Main speaker will be Mr Ian McCloy, who specialises in developing strategies for business in Africa. (Please click here for more info.)

This year, our Annual Event will be Unplugged! on October 6, 2017. Let yourselves be entertained and experience a very different Annual Event of the Chamber. (Please click here for more info.)

A delegation with a focus on industry energy efficiency will be travelling to Namibia from 23 – 27 October. Please click here for more info.

We’ve got an action-packed month ahead of us!

Best regards

Matthias Boddenberg

Nspire Strategic and Management Solutions
Many employers use labour brokers for filling temporary positions in their organisations.

This practice has been a very convenient way of meeting a short-term need, without the consequences of long-term staff obligations. However, the debate has been going on since the amendments to legislation as to whether this is an acceptable strategy or a possible unfair labour practice, with business and labour at opposing sides of the discussion.

A recent judgement by the Labour Appeal Court has brought some finalisation to the matter. However, this judgement may well put the unaware organisation at risk as it has some far-reaching consequences.

We have placed a brief overview of the judgement on our website, along with an outline of the implications for those business that make use of labour brokers. We would like to encourage you to read through these findings, as it may well affect your own business. You can read the synopsis by clicking here.

Industry welcomes OR Tambo security enhancements

Enhanced security measures implemented at OR Tambo International Airport have been welcomed by Asata and other industry professionals. This comes after a warning issued by the United States Consul General advising US citizens to exercise caution when travelling from the airport.

Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula, recently announced improved security measures at Ortia that include the creation of a centralised and integrated control room. The minister admitted that there had been a lapse in security at the airport, which had led to multimillion-rand heists, goods being smuggled into the country and ‘follow-home’ robberies.
