Dear Members and Friends,

The World Economic Forum on Africa 2017 took place in Durban, South Africa, from 3 – 5 May. With its focus on driving economic transformation in Africa through inclusive growth models, the WEF attracted delegates from more than 100 countries, many of them from Germany.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Ms. Brigitte Zypries, as well as Finance Minister, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, were among the participants and presented the initiatives Pro!Afrika  and the Compact for Africa respectively. On the business side, Dr. Eric Schweitzer, President of the “Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag” (DIHK, aka Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry), Prof. Dr. Heinz-Walter Grosse, Chairman of the Subsahara Initiative of German Business (SAFRI), Mr. Joe Kaeser, President and CEO of Siemens AG, documented the great interest of German companies in sustainable partnerships with their African counterparts.

The Chamber hosted a lunch with Minister Dr. Schäuble with the CEOs of a number of German companies in SA. Main points of discussion included the need for a structured approach to the introduction of vocational training, which is one of the essential condition for economic development. Other topics that were brought up were the economic transformation in the countries of Southern Africa as well as the consequences of recent political developments.

Minister Zypries, accompanied by a business delegation, held talks with the South African Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Rob Davies. The discussions focused on the concerns of the German business community regarding the deteriorating investment climate in the country as well as the initiative of German business in the country, namely the Enterprise and Supplier Development Fund (Deutscher Industriefond).

On Friday May 5, the Chamber marked its 65th Anniversary with a celebration at Peter Falke Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Guests of Honour at the event included Minister Ms. Brigitte Zypries; Premier of the Western Cape, Ms. Helen Zille; Minister of Economic Opportunities, Allan Winde; Dr. Eric Schweitzer of the DIHK; Prof. Dr. Heinz- Walter Grosse of SAFRI; President of the Chamber, Mr. Seth Phalatse; and Vice President of the Chamber, Mr. Peter Falke. Around 120 guests took part in the event.

Last but not least: The Chamber’s Annual General Meeting will take place on 22 June 2017 at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park. A separate invitation has been sent out and all members are welcome to attend. (Please click here to see the invitation)

The Consulting Academy Johannesburg –
South Africa’s first student run consulting firm

South African businesses are struggling to find innovative solutions at a fair price, while students are looking for practical experience. What's missing is a link between those two - and that is exactly what we provide:

We started as a team of five German students with the vision of empowering South Africa’s workforce by bridging the gap between students and companies - that is why we founded The Consulting Academy. Student consultants get practical experience by working in one of the departments within The Consulting Academy, but also by working on real-life consulting projects.

There is a trend among renowned businesses to work hand in hand with student-run consulting firms. We in particular have completed projects for several renowned clients, such as BMW and did, just to name one, the reorganization of Allianz’ legal department in Germany.

In Johannesburg we have grown by 20 selected local students, who went through a strict assessment process and finished our intensive training. Now we are looking for partners and seeking challenges with new clients.

You want new ways to recruit future employees, access to a selected pool of talents and get innovative approaches on your challenges?  Feel free to get in touch with us and let’s take your business to new heights together!

Investigating Alternative, Fair and Sustainable Solutions for University Tuition Fees
Higher education around the world is in need of a new financial model to sustain it. A model that is fair, socially responsible and ethical. Most importantly, one that is accessible to all. For the last 20 years such a model - the Reverse Generational Contract (RGC), has been assisting students in Germany.

Chancen eG and L’appel Germany have partnered to find out whether this model can be implemented in South Africa. We realise that the political, educational and economic landscape in South Africa is vastly different to that of Germany, therefore,  our intention is to tailor the existing model to the specific regional needs. For this reason, we are carrying out a feasibility study, in which we are working closely with local partners.

A large part of the feasibility study requires a solid understanding of the current labour market and what opportunities are available for graduates. We are reaching out to companies across South Africa to assist us by distributing our survey amongst their employees.

If you would like to participate in this survey, please email blankers@chancen-eg.de or call 065 378 2091.
