Dear Members and Friends,

April was a very busy month with much activity. The Chamber hosted delegation of 20 delegates from Saxony, headed by Dep. Minister President Martin Dulig. The companies represented a variety of industry sectors, including energy, mining supply and machinery. They visited Johannesburg, Durban and Maputo and had a number of promising discussions with potential local partners.

A delegation of 70 participants from Bavaria, headed by Dep. Minister President Ilse Aigner visited Johannesburg and Cape Town. Industries represented in this delegation were the energy sector, machinery and infrastructure related companies. The size of the delegation as well as the intensity of the discussions mirrored the great interest of Bavarian companies in establishing and expanding their partnerships with South African companies.

In the political sphere, the abrupt recall from an investment road show and then the firing of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan led to doubts about the future management of the state’s finances.

The former Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba replacing Gordhan and the downgrade of SA’s local and international credit rating to sub-investment grade caused shock waves in the economy in general and in the financial markets in particular.

The discussions in the ANC around “radical economic transformation” and the dreaded “expropriation without compensation” didn’t help to improve the dwindling trust of foreign investors in the consistency of economic policy in SA.

It is probably safe to say that we are going to see a lot more of this in the run-up to the ANC’s elective conference at the end of the year and even more until after the general elections in 2019.

The voice of reason and mutual cooperation to manage South Africa’s manifold challenges will not be listened to, until business unites and engages in discussions with government that are aimed at finding solutions and not throwing around buzzwords.

We do hope that April is the month of new beginnings towards a positive development in SA in the interest of all of her people.

The Competence Centre: Sustainable Energies (SECC)

In the framework of the “Energy Solutions Made in Germany” Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) the SA-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be hosting an energy efficiency delegation from Germany.

SAXONY – (SACHSEN) Delegation  April 2017

This month, we hosted a delegation that included the Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport of the Free State of Saxony, Mr Martin Dulig, together with a group of Saxon companies (from various industries) on a visit to the Republic of South Africa. We hosted an intensive 2-day programme over the 7th and 8th April 2017 which included a presentation of Saxony, formal address by Mr Dulig, networking sessions, B2B meetings, addresses by key local players such as TIKZN as well as sightseeing, luncheons and dinner. The delegation and activities were successful despite this being a politically sensitive time in South Africa. We were directly affected by the national strike or call-to-action, which included a march not far from our Chamber offices in Durban. This restricted the turnout of local business representatives in particular.

International Bazaar to be held in Pretoria

An International Bazaar and Family Fun day will be hosted in Pretoria on 20 May, as a charity fundraising initiative of the International Diplomatic Spouses Association – IDSA. Handicrafts and food from all over the world will be on sale. There will be a Raffle with amazing prizes, entertainment for children, as well as performances by the Gum Boot Dancers from Boys' High and the Dare to Dream ballet dancers from Hammanskraal, among others.
All profits will be destined to support various charitable organizations, as one of the main purposes of the association.

IDSA is an organization comprised of spouses of Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to South Africa and embodies a vital link between the diplomatic community and ordinary South Africans, especially vulnerable andunderprivileged groups. Last year alone, IDSA raised over R350 000 to ease the plight of women and children through various local charities, in addition to direct donations of food, toiletries, and toys and hours of volunteer work.

The bazaar will be held at the St. Mary's Diocesan School for Girls (186, Duxbury Road, Hillcrest, Pretoria) on 20 May, from 10.00 to 14.00. Entrance fee is R30 (free for children 5 & under).

South Africa to host 10th World Choir Games
Olympic Games of Choral Music take place on the African continent for the first time

In 2018 South Africa will witness one of the most spectacular music events of choral singing: The 10th World Choir Games, the Olympic Games of choral music will be held in Tshwane from July 4-14, 2018. For the first time in its history Africa will be the host of this huge event – the biggest celebration of choral music will finally take place for the first time on the continent that gave the world singing, rhythm and dancing!

Thousands of singers from all over the world will get the chance to experience at first hand the atmosphere, the special spirit and character of South African choral music, share their common passion for singing and get inspired by each other. They’re eager to join this 11 days journey and meet singers from other countries and cultures in competitions, at Friendship Concerts and in fascinating super-sized singing projects.

Horst Kriete has been nominated for the "German Football Ambassador". Football and development aid are parts of his life for over 35 years now. 1979 he started his international carrier in Nigeria and was responsible for the training program of the national football federation. Wesentliche Anlageländer waren Russland, gefolgt von China, Indien, der Türkei sowie Indonesien. Aber auch Investitionen in Iran, Honduras und Marokko hat der Bund abgesichert.

Das BMWi bittet Sie, bei Ihren Kontakten vor Ort auf das Angebot des Bundes zur Absicherung von Direktinvestitionen im Ausland hinzuweisen. Die konstant hohe Nachfrage nach Investitionsgarantien zeigt, dass die Unternehmen diese Absicherungsmöglichkeit für Investitionen schätzen – vielleicht ergibt sich an der ein oder anderen Stelle die Möglichkeit, die Garantien als weiteren Baustein für eine Investition anzubringen. Zim – SA Forum Investment Conference

Goethe-Institut now offers language courses for kids aged 10 to 16

Kids from the age of 10 to 16 can now learn German at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. Our special youth courses are particularly designed for young learners and lead up to our official FIT certification. The next course starts on 15 July. We also offer an end of the year course running from 1 October to 8 December. This course can be booked with a 10% early bird discount for everyone signing up by  September.
