Cooperation with Europe: Practical Insights in Implementing the GDPR

Johannesburg, 30 October 2018 – The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is here to stay, but some things are getting lost in translation. While companies like Facebook and Google are adapting at a rapid pace by moving user accounts outside of the EU and updating their product offerings, other companies operating in the EU are running into more obstacles even as they attempt to become more compliant with the new law. To offer its members a better understanding on how to comply with the GDPR, while operating in the EU and South Africa, the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted a seminar led by Mr Jens Sorg, Chief Representative with CPC AG for South Africa.

Mr Sorg’s presentation offered tremendous insights into the basic criteria of GDPR-compliant data practices as well as the “to-do’s” and don'ts of establishing a GDPR-compliant data processing system within one’s company. It appears that the real challenge lies in a shift in corporate culture regarding how data is handled in the day-to-day. Achieving compliancy with these data protection laws is proving comparable to a Russian nesting doll; as each process in the company is re-evaluated, flaws become apparent in another element of current standard procedure. “It’s not a sprint, but a marathon,” Mr Sorg emphasised in his presentation.

One of these difficult adjustments is having to regularly delete data, either automatically or upon request. Then there is also the question of whether data processing should take place in the European Union or whether an overseas service provider would be able to meet the GDPR standards – for many companies that is too great a risk to take. Many of these questions were asked during the Q and A session that followed the presentation.

Guests found the seminar very informative and practical. One guest stated that he found the seminar “very worthwhile”. The event came to a close with refreshments and a lively networking session.
